Evaluation of a Cow-Side Calcium Test for Detection of Subclinical Hypocalcemia in Early Postpartum Cows

Team: Spronk, E., Stampfl, B., Cramer, G

Funding Source: Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica, Inc. Student Assistantship

Project Time Frame: 2014-2015

The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the performance of a new cow-side blood calcium meter for diagnostic test characteristics (sensitivity, specificity), economics, and usability in the field. Additionally we aimed to describe the relationship of SCH at different time points with post- partum diseases including hoof lesions. This project is nearing completion.  As this was initial evaluation, several concerns were identified for future development and the company is continuing to refine this technology.
